Isma’s Journey to Hearing

Poor hearing is very isolation, especially for children.  Speech is difficult, and the development of all the normal family bonds is severely disrupted.

Isma’s Journey to Hearing

Isma is a cheerful five-year-old boy who brings joy to everyone around him. When he was three, his mother noticed that he was experiencing hearing loss. Initially, she was hesitant to seek help due to concerns that hearing aids might be harmful and how difficult it would be to keep them in place.

However, after attending a meeting organized by LTCH for parents facing similar challenges, Isma’s parents felt encouraged and decided to have him fitted with a hearing aid, which was provided free of charge by LTCH.

Meeting other children who wore hearing aids made Isma feel happy and confident about wearing his own. The hearing aid significantly improved his hearing abilities and overall life chances.

LTCH was also able to offer follow-up support and promptly addressed any issues, such as when Isma’s hearing aid stopped working. With their assistance, Isma continues to thrive and enjoy his childhood to the fullest.

Isma’s Story

This narrative captures Isma’s experience and the journey his family undertook regarding his hearing loss and the decision to use a hearing aid

Isma is a cheerful five-year-old boy who lives with his loving parents.  His mother first noticed that something might be wrong when he was just three years old; he often seemed to be unaware of sounds around him.  Concerned, they took him for hearing tests provided by LTCH, which confirmed that he had a hearing loss.

Initially, Isma’s parents were hesitant about getting him a hearing aid. They had heard remarks from neighbours and friends suggesting that hearing aids could damage his ears, and they were worried about Isma’s stubborn nature—what if he lost the aid or refused to wear it?

However, everything changed when Isma’s mother received an invitation to a parents’ social group run by LTCH designed for families with children who use hearing aids. Eager to learn more, she attended the meeting with Isma.

There, she met other parents who shared their experiences, discussing the benefits of hearing aids and reassuring her that these devices wouldn’t harm Isma’s ears. One mother even introduced her to a little boy younger than Isma who had successfully adjusted to wearing his hearing aid. She explained the strategies she used to help her child keep the aid in place, which gave Isma’s mother hope.Feeling empowered by the information and support she received from LTCH, Isma’s mother promised to discuss everything she had learned with Isma’s father. A few weeks later, she let LTCH that they both had agreed to move forward with getting Isma a hearing aid!

In August 2024 Isma was fitted with his very first hearing aid provided free of charge by LTCH.  The follow-up call in October 2024, was filled with joy; Isma’s mother shared that he liked his hearing aid, and, to her surprise, he was not removing it as she had feared.  There was a minor setback as the hearing aid stopped working but the LTCH was able to get it fixed at a follow-up appointment.

Despite this setback, Isma’s mother was very grateful for the positive impact the hearing aid had on her son’s life. She was thrilled that he could hear better and appreciated all the efforts made by the charity to support her child.  Isma’s journey to better hearing had just begun, and the family felt hopeful about the future.
